Skilled Volunteers for Israel

Skilled Volunteers for Israel

English B’Yachad (EBY) is an online tutoring program that connects North American Jewish retirees with Israeli young adults seeking improved English skills to open the doors of economic opportunity. English proficiency is an essential skill for success in the highly competitive Israeli labor market.

English B'Yachad serves young Israeli adults from Israel's Ethiopian community as well as from other communities within Israel's social and geographic periphery. EBY volunteers provide high quality, individualized English tutoring to help Israelis access jobs in high-tech and other professional career paths that offer upward economic mobility, altering the trajectory of their lives.

EBY works with three Israeli nonprofits who refer students - Tech-Career, Empowering Ethiopian Women and LaMerhak.

EBY offers a unique "volunteer in Israel from home" experience for volunteer tutors. Tutors need not have prior English teaching or tutoring experience and the time commitment is approximately 1-1.5 hours per week per student. A minimum commitment of 10 sessions with a student is required.

The program offers volunteer tutors an array of curated resources to assist in working with students, a virtual community of tutors that meet together monthly and formal training and orientation.
